WHO CEO: Encouraging News on Corona Vaccine
The World Health Organization CEO calls the news that the corona vaccine from the American pharmaceutical company Pfizer is 90 percent effective in preventing infection “encouraging”.
Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus welcomed Pfizer’s announcement via Twitter.
Other leaders were also enthusiastic, including US President Donald Trump and his successor Joe Biden.
German Health Minister Jens Spahn and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau spoke of “very encouraging” news. The latter said he hopes there will be a vaccine early in the new year.
The European Union medicines agency EMA is still working on previous data provided by Pfizer.
The preliminary research results on the basis of which the pharmaceutical company reported that the vaccine is 90 percent effective have not yet been received, sources said to AFP news agency.
The European Commission maintains its prediction that a vaccine could potentially be approved and available “early in the next year”.
