The United Nations mission to monitor the human rights situation in Ukraine has “credible information” that the Ukrainian army has tortured Russian prisoners of war.

As a result, the Russians would be poorly treated and not be allowed to communicate with lawyers or family.

The UN mission sees videos appearing from both sides of detainees in inhumane conditions being forced to make derogatory statements. The mission also receives reports of rapes by Russian troops, including in groups. The UN recalls that this is against international law and must stop immediately.

According to the UN, 3,381 civilians died in Ukraine in the first 76 days of the war, but the number is likely much higher. In Mariupol, in particular, many more people are expected to have died, but this is difficult to verify.
