The EU Threatens to Restrict the Export of Corona Vaccines Further
The EU will block corona vaccines’ exports if destination countries continue to keep corona vaccines or ingredients to themselves.
Exports to countries that have already advanced further with vaccinations could also possibly be reduced, the European Commission warns. She explicitly mentions the United Kingdom.
The EU has been arguing with the UK for some time about the export of corona vaccines.
Tens of millions of vaccines from the EU were sent worldwide, primarily to the British, but conversely, the EU did not receive any vaccines from British soil. Not even when the supply of the British-Swedish AstraZeneca started to falter.
The European Commission wants “reciprocity”, says President Ursula von der Leyen. If a country makes vaccines but keeps them to themselves, Brussels “makes exports dependent on their degree of openness”.
Moreover, the question is whether it is still “proportional” to deliver vaccines to countries that have already vaccinated many more people. “All options are on the table.”
