Sweden wants to join NATO. Swedish Prime Minister Magdalena Andersson said that the country would apply to join the alliance in Stockholm on Monday. Previously, almost all parties in parliament had expressed support for a request to join. “

The government has absolute to inform NATO of Sweden’s will to join the alliance,” the prime minister said, alongside Ulf Kristersson, head of the main opposition party. “We are leaving an era and entering a new one.”

“The government has decided to inform NATO of Sweden’s will to join the alliance,” the prime minister said, alongside Ulf Kristersson, head of the main opposition party. “We are leaving an era and entering a new one.”

The prime minister’s party, the Social Democrats, had announced their position on Sunday for joining the treaty organization.

The intention is to apply together with Finland in the coming days. Finland had also previously announced that it would apply for membership in the alliance. Parliament has yet to give the green light for this, but that seems like a formality.

The neighbouring countries have a long history of neutrality in times of war. However, this has now come to an end with the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Despite objections from NATO member Turkey, the alliance’s secretary-general, Jens Stoltenberg, expects both Sweden and Finland to join soon. All thirty current Member States must agree to this.
