Security Council Wants UN Chief Guterres to Stay On

The United Nations Security Council supports the candidacy of António Guterres, who is running for a second term as UN Secretary-General.

That was the result of a vote at a New York City Council meeting on Tuesday.

Guterres (72), who served as Prime Minister of Portugal from 1995-2002, was elected UN chief in October 2016 and began his duties on January 1, 2017.

Before that, he was chairman of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) for ten years.
