On Friday, the Russian army said that it is ready “at any time” to negotiate a ceasefire in the battle for the Azovstal steel complex, the last stronghold of the Ukrainian armed forces in Mariupol so that civilians can be evacuated and fighters to surrender.

“That humanitarian pause could begin as soon as Ukrainian troops raise white flags in all or part of Azovstal,” Russia’s defence ministry said.

The ministry promises that evacuated civilians will be given the choice of going to Ukrainian or Russian-controlled areas and that the injured will be properly cared for. “Buses, cars and ambulances are permanently available to transport people.”

According to the ministry, the proposal was also passed on to Ukrainian Deputy Prime Minister Irina Vereshchuk, the United Nations, the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe, and the International Committee of the Red Cross. The message would also be broadcast every 30 minutes “on all radio channels to the Ukrainian troops in Azovstal.”
