Report: Top Officials Responsible for Party Gate
Britain’s political leadership and senior officials must bear responsibility for the illegal lockdown parties staged at 10 Downing Street, Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s official residence.
That concludes top official Sue Gray in her report on ‘party gate’, the scandal surrounding government parties and drinks during corona lockdowns, for which Johnson has also been fined.
According to the report, many of the parties organized between May 2020 and April 2021 should not have taken place. England had to deal with strict corona measures during that period. “The public has a right to expect the very highest standards of behaviour in such places and it is clear that what has happened does not live up to this,” Gray said in the study.
The top official investigated 16 events and published all of her critical findings in January, pointing to “failed leadership and judgment”. But the full report was withheld due to the ongoing police investigation.
Prime Minister Johnson will make a statement in the House of Commons later on Wednesday about the findings in the report. According to the BBC, he will say, among other things, that he takes “full responsibility” for his missteps in the party gate file and offers his apologies.
