Putin Thanks Turkey for Help With US Prisoner Swap
Russian President Vladimir Putin has thanked Turkey for its assistance in a prisoner exchange with the United States. In a telephone conversation with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, his office said.
Turkish intelligence has been thanked for cooperating and monitoring the exchange in Ankara. The swapped prisoners were US ex-Marine Trevor Reed and Russian pilot Konstantin Yaroshenko. Earlier, the US also expressed its thanks to Turkey.
What is striking about the exchange is that it took place when tensions between the US and Russia rose sharply due to the war in Ukraine. Erdogan said with Putin that the exchange shows how much Turkey values peace and its efforts to mediate between Russia and Ukraine.
Turkey maintains good relations with the governments in both Moscow and Kyiv. Delegations from the two countries met several times in Turkey to discuss the Russian invasion. However, Turkish efforts to arrange a meeting between Putin and Ukrainian President Volodimir Zelensky have been unsuccessful.
