Pompeo Calls New Hong Kong Law Disastrous

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has called the new Hong Kong security laws “arbitrary” and “disastrous”. He said it could affect relations with the city-state.

China plans to establish and deploy national security agencies in Hong Kong in the future.

This is contained in the draft decision on security laws for the city-state before the National People’s Congress that began in Beijing on Friday.

The legislation is controversial, among other things, because it is added to the laws of the city-state without the intervention of the parliament in Hong Kong.

The new law wants Beijing to get a better grip on the unrest in Hong Kong.

“The United States condemns the proposal to unilaterally and arbitrarily impose national security laws on Hong Kong,” Pompeo said in a statement.

“The United States strongly urges Beijing to reconsider its disastrous proposal, to honour its international obligations and to respect Hong Kong’s high level of autonomy, democratic institutions and civil liberties.”
