North Korea Wants to Strengthen Nuclear Capabilities

North Korean leader Kim Jong-un plans to “strengthen and develop” his country’s nuclear weapons. He announced this in a speech following Tuesday’s major military parade in Pyongyang.

“We will continue to take steps to strengthen and progress our nation’s nuclear capabilities at an accelerated pace,” Kim Jong-un said, according to North Korea’s KCNA news agency.

North Korea is subject to severe international sanctions for its nuclear and ballistic programs. Diplomatic negotiations to convince Kim Jong-un to give up those programs have stalled since a meeting between the North Korean leader, and then-US President Donald Trump failed in 2019.

US and South Korean observers and officials suspect that Pyongyang could soon resume its nuclear weapons tests, which halted in 2017.

Satellite images already showed signs of activity in a tunnel at the Punggye-ri site, which North Korea said was demolished in 2018 before the first summit between Donald Trump and Kim Jong-un.
