First Confirmed Fatality from Omicron Variant in United Kingdom
In the United Kingdom, at least one person has died after being infected with the Omicron variant of the coronavirus. Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced this to British media on Monday.
Johnson reported the news while visiting a vaccination centre in west London. “Omicron, unfortunately, leads to hospital admissions. And unfortunately, at least one confirmed Omicron patient has died,” Johnson is quoted as saying by the ITV news site.
“So I think we should put aside the idea that this is a slightly milder version of the virus. We must recognize that the virus is spreading rapidly among the population. So the best thing we can do is to all go for a booster shot.”
According to Johnson, the Omicron variant is already becoming dominant in London. “Here in the capital, the variant accounts for about forty percent of the cases. By tomorrow this will be the majority of cases,” he told the BBC.
