ECDC Describes New Variant of Coronavirus as Worrying
The European Center for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) describes the new corona variant B.1.1.529 as worrisome. The variant occurs in southern Africa and has also been identified in a small number of other countries.
The new status of the variant can be found on the ECDC website. The European list already includes the variants Beta, Gamma and Delta. These were first identified in South Africa, Brazil and India, respectively.
According to scientists, B.1.1.529 may be more contagious than the Delta variant, which is now causing heavy waves of contamination in several countries.
Experts from the World Health Organization (WHO) will discuss the potential dangers of the new variant on Friday but have said the danger will only be fully clear in a few weeks. The WHO may rename the variant and determine whether the organization, like ECDC, finds it a worrisome variant.
