Dozens of People Killed by an Exploded Tank Truck in Tanzania

At least 57 people were killed in the East African country of Tanzania when a tank truck exploded. The incident took place in Morogoro, about 200 kilometres west of Dar es Salaam, the largest city in the country.

Most victims are people who wanted to recover leaking fuel for their motorbike (taxi) from the damaged tanker.

The explosion occurred around 8.30 a.m. local time. At least 57 people died. Dozens of others have been hospitalized with burns.

The majority of the victims were drivers of moto-taxis and people from the area who had arrived after the tank truck had an accident. They tried to recover fuel from the damaged tanker, but it exploded.

Incidents like this, where people are killed in explosions while trying to take leaking fuel from damaged tankers, are not uncommon in East Africa. In 2013 at least 29 people died in the Ugandan capital Kampala in a similar accident.
