Congolese Police Arrest Two Suspects for Murder of Italian Ambassador
Two men suspected of the murder of the Italian ambassador last year in the eastern Congolese city of Goma have been arrested. The police reported this in the province of North Kivu on Tuesday.
A third suspect, who allegedly fired shots at Ambassador Luca Attanasio, is still on the run.
Congolese investigators say Attanasio was the victim of a botched kidnapping attempt. His captors had hoped to demand millions of dollars in ransom for the ambassador. But instead of kidnapping, the ambassador was shot dead in the attack on his convoy on February 22.
His bodyguard and his Congolese driver were also killed.
The Italian ambassador to Congo was on his way from Goma to a school in the Rutshuru region. Shortly before that, that road had been declared safe to take without a security escort, according to the UN World Food Programme.
